Why do dogs align themselves with Earth's magnetic field?

It’s 40 degrees out with a wind chill that makes it 35, you’re in your pajamas with two mismatched shoes, all because your dog had a rush call to go potty. Now that you’re out there, he’s taking forever to find the perfect spot. No quite literally, forever. Well you’re dog isn’t just trying to find the perfect spot he’s also trying to align it with the earth's magnetic field.

Scientists in the Czech Republic and Germany examined over 7,000 potty breaks. They ruled out wind, sun, and any other element that could interfere with the dog’s decision. They found the only other factor would be the Earth’s magnetic field. When the magnetic field was stable, the dogs continuously pooped on the north-south axis and continuously avoided the east-west axis. So your dog isn’t just finding a random spot to drop a doody, it’s analyzing the earth’s magnetic field.

Due to the language barrier, I had to have his owners translate. Mancho is a dog who came from the village of Sambo Creek, Honduras. He is roughly 60 years old, which is 10 in human years. According to his owner his favorite hobbies are stealing whole sheets of cookies, chasing seagulls, singing, and sun tanning. He also enjoys farting really loudly and then leaving the room once he can smell his own fart.
