Many dogs are homeless in Honduras and they do not have access to health treatments and preventatives. It’s important for dogs to receive these treatments and preventatives not only for their health but for the community around them. The following outlines some of the health treatments and preventatives many dogs in Honduras need.
Heartworm treatment
The amount of mosquitoes in Honduras is outstanding… which can only mean the amount of heartworms is even greater. Dogs who get heartworms typically need an expensive one month long treatment or a slower one year treatment. Dogs who have untreated heartworms suffer immensely. Therefore, heartworm preventative treatment is greatly needed for dogs living in Honduras.
Mange and other skin condition treatments
Being outside most of the time can result in dogs getting many skin conditions. Close contact with other dogs can make these diseases spread quickly. Giving dogs these treatments will help them as well as stop the spread of these skin diseases to other dogs, humans, and animals.
Worm preventative and deworming
Believe it or not but eating literally whatever besides dog food is a leading factor for dogs catching worms and parasites. Unfortunately eating whatever is what most Honduras street dogs eat. Worm prevention and deworming will not only help the dog but it will also prevent these worms and parasites from spreading to other animals.
Vaccines
CDC guidelines prevent dogs from entering the US from Honduras because of the high rabies rate (effective until January 2023). Vaccines prevent many deadly diseases from spreading to dogs, humans, and other wildlife. For these reasons it is very important that Honduras street dogs receive these vaccines.
Food
A lot of dogs require a lot of food. Poverty in some areas prevents pets and strays from receiving the right amount of food. These dogs often have to resort to eating wildlife and trash in response to not having enough dog food. Feeding dogs actual dog food will not only help them but it will help many small creatures and wildlife from being killed as well.
